Asparagus fern is also known as lace fern, it is a climbing plant in the genus Asparagus. It is an attractive perennial, easy to care and native to South Africa. This plant has small, needle like leaves with green foliage. In the house, an east-facing window in a humid environment is ideal.

Light

Asparagus fern prefer bright, indirect light but it can tolerate direct sunlight. To be careful extreme light can damage the leaves. If you notice that your plant leaves get yellow then move the plant in shade area. In warmer months, you can move your plant to shaded area.

Water

At first, you can check if your plant needs water by your finger into the top two inches of soil. If the plant is turning brown or drooping, this is a sign it is not getting enough water. Asparagus plant prefers reduced watering during the winter months. You could continue to water it every time the soil is dry.

This plant grow best in moist, well draining soil with organic nature that is slightly acidic pH 6.5-6.8. The potting mix soil with organic matter like a blend of mix soil, perlite and compost. The tropical substrate mix which comprises of orchid bark, coco coir, worm castings and black sand.

Temperature & humidity

To maintain a warm temperature around 70-80 degree Fahrenheit, daytime temperature is 75 degree and night time is 65 degree. The below 55 degree can cause the leaves turning yellow. It grow best in a humid conditions so regular misting or the use of a pebble tray can help keep the plant green and healthy. If the air in your home is too dry, you can use a humidifier to increase the humidity.

Fertiliser

Fertiliser is not necessary to grow your plant but you can use liquid or water-soluble all-purpose plant food diluted to half strength. Asparagus usually likes a balanced fertilizer of 5-10-10.When the plant is actively growing new stems and foliage, apply a weak liquid fertiliser, apply a liquid fertiliser about once a week.

Propagation of Asparagus fern plant care

Propagation is a method by which you can make many plants of your choice. The best time to take your plant cutting for propagation is growing season when the plant actively grow healthy. The easiest way to propagate by root division. Carefully separate the rhizomes into propagating sections by cutting them with a sharp, sterilised knife. Replant each in a new location and keep it well watered until you see new growth in a few weeks.

Make sure to trim just above a set of leaves and regular pruning will also increase the chances of the plant producing its stunning, fragrant flowers.

When the plant’s shape becomes too sprawling, cut the damage, old stems to encourage new growth. Use clean garden sharp scissors to remove brown portions. Spring is the best time to prune your plant and cut back the plant to a height of around 4-6 inches. Prune asparagus fern to keep it in shape and cut any dead stems at the base.

  • Purple asparagus : Another variety of asparagus plant is purple asparagus, it has violet-colored stems and a conical tip. Choose a location with well-drained soil and proper sunlight 
  • Wild asparagus : This plant is known as shatavari. Get water when the top inches of soil is dry.
  • Asparagus scandens : Asparagus scandens is a flowering plant native to South Africa in the genus Asparagus.

Repotting of Asparagus fern

Choose a container that fix the growth and make sure the container has large drainage holes with mix potting mix. This process can stress the plant so only do it when necessary. The best time to repot your plant in early spring. After the flowers bloom then the energy shifts to root development and making it the ideal time to repot.

Place the divided plants with well draining potting mix soil. At this point repot the whole plant into large containers. It grow quickly, and the tuberous roots can easily break a pot.

  • It can affected by pest like aphids, mites, slugs, and mealybugs. The common disease associated with root rot, botrytis, rust, powdery mildew & southern blight.
  • Another common problem is low humidity, the leaves turn into brown tips. Root rot caused by a soil mix that doesn’t drain well.
