Origin and Introduction
Sweetheart plant is known as Hoya kerrii Plant, it is a species of Hoya native to the south-east of Asia. Its eponymous collector is Arthur Francis George Kerr, Irish physician and botanist.
Sweetheart plant leaves are green and creamy white borders. You can plant a single sweet heart with appropriate light, soil, water, temperature and fertiliser also.I feel very happy to be able to share this information based on my experience.

Sweetheart Plant care
Here are some essential things I have shared that will help your plant grow. Hope you like the article.
Light
Hoya kerrii does best in very bright indirect light. It may tolerate medium indirect light, but growth will be extra slow and leaves will be small. Place it near a south-facing window where it can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. These heart shaped leaves require lots of light to grow and thrive indoor. Choose a location where your plant gets several hours of bright, indirect light. The artificial light like LED grow light is an excellent choice for your plants.
Water

Hoya is a succulent plant, which stores water in the fleshy leaf. To allow, when the soil is dry gets water. This plant is water-storing leaves and are highly susceptible to overwatering and root rot.In the spring and summer, water your hoya once every 14 days. In the Summer, you can water frequently; in the winter, you should cut back on watering significantly. You have taken a cutting from your plant and placed it in water for a few weeks, you will see those roots start to grow. The longer you leave the cutting in the water, the more roots it will grow.
Soil
The best soil for Hoya plants is well-draining, rich in nutrients, and provides good aeration for the roots. Planting them in regular indoor potting soil without any amendments will lead to compacted roots and stunted growth. Peat-based soil, orchid bark mix, cactus mix, and vermiculite and perlite mix are all excellent options for Hoya plants.
Temperature & humidity
Hoya kerri can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, it prefers temperatures between 68 and 75 degree Fahrenhite. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, sweetheart plant enjoys a warm and humid growth environment.Brown tips to the leaves are the result of a dry atmosphere, try giving your plant a good misting and water more regularly.
Humidity is the silent parts in your plant’s growth story. They can tolerate lower humidity levels, you may notice that their growth is stunted. Its prefers 60-80% relative humidity ideal for Sweetheart(Hoya Kerri) health and blooming. Warm air can hold more moisture, so relative humidity is an important player in your plant environment.
Fertilizer
Hoya will grow happily with a balanced indoor plant fertilizer. Choose a formula with a balanced NPK ratio, such as 2-2-2, for consistent and strong foliar growth. Regularly feeding your Hoya with a balanced fertilizer during spring and summer will provide the nutrients it needs to grow vigorously. Use a high phosphate fertilizer for two months prior to the plant’s normal blooming time. It’s important to strike a balance and provide them with enough light to promote healthy growth and flowering.
How to get propagate Sweetheart Plant?

The best way to propagate Hoya is to take cuttings that have two nodes. A node is a place where the leaves emerge from the stem. Either place them in a vase with water or into a jar with moist sphagnum moss. As long as they are healthy and in the right conditions, they can theoretically continue to grow indefinitely until incorrect care, environment, or pests and diseases kills them off.
You can either set the cutting in a glass of water or dip it in rooting hormone and then plant. Another way is soil propagation; mix perlite, vermiculite, or clean sand with potting soil to improve drainage. Moisten the mix, then plant your cutting with the node buried. You need only take cuttings. To do this, cut one leaf from the plant, and put it into fresh, sowing soil, such as our Plantura Organic Herb & Seedling Compost.
Sweetheart Plant Pruning
Pruning is important to create many plants from one plant. These plants are very sensitive to wet soil so if you notice your plant becoming squishy or translucent, overwatering is the likely culprit. The succulent leaves of hoya kerrii are extremely effective at retaining moisture, you won’t need to water them often. This plants can slowly grow to form a bushy cluster of small green hearts, which makes them suitable for a hanging basket once they’re more mature.
Common problem of Sweetheart Plant
- Shrivelling or wrinkled leaves, combined with under-watering, it can be caused by not enough water or low humidity.
- Your Hoya could be experiencing transplant stress or shock. It takes a few weeks for the plant to adjust to its environment.
- Fungal leaf spot is one of the most common problems that affect hoya plants. The spots are small, round, and usually dark brown or black in color.
- Care must be taken to prevent the plant roots from rotting due to excess water, otherwise the entire plant may die.
