Oyster plant Care

Based on my experience, this article provides some important tips that are absolutely necessary.

Light

Oyster plant is ideal for use as a quick-growing undercover, thriving in full sun to deep shade. This plant prefers indirect bright light to keep the bold colors. It can be in lower light but colors may fade to green.

The species and varieties require light of specific intensity to produce properly formed fruiting bodies. Light is not essential in the mycelial growth period.

Water

Water your Oyster plant when soil is dry, thoroughly untill you see it flow out of the drainage hole. This plant is sensitivity to fluoride and other chemicals commonly found in tap water, which might cause leaf tip burn.

Distilled or rainwater is preferable for watering. Ensure to avoid overwatering to maintain optimal health. Its need to be submerged underwater to breathe, they can survive for long periods during low tide by trapping water inside their shells.Oysters can survive out of the water for up to 2 weeks.

Soil

Oysters are a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be used in many different ways in the kitchen. It can help improve soil health, fertilize plants, and even deter pests. Oysters can reach up to 10 inches in length.

The shell is elongated, thick, rough and sometimes sharp. A sandy loam is perfect, but rocky soil also will do.Well-drained soils are a necessity since oyster plant is susceptible to a variety of leaf and especially root problems if over-watered. It is extremely drought tolerant, even growing in cracks in a concrete wall.

Temperature & humidity

This tropical plant that prefers warm temperatures of 68 to 100 ℉.In colder temperatures, it is important to protect the plant from drafts and keep it in a warm location. It will spawn from late June to November, peaking in June and July.

The Oyster Plant prefers a somewhat humid environment. Mist often, use a pebble tray, or place a humidifier nearby. The humidity levels 80-90%.

It can be grown outdoors in warm climates or indoors as an indoor plant. Oysters have three-chambered hearts that pump colorless blood throughout their bodies. Placing the plant in your bathroom is also a good way to provide humidity, you could also use an electric humidifier.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer is not necessary for Oyster plant but it can promote healthy growth. This plant use plant monthly during growth with high nitrogen fertilizers, using half the recommended strength to boost foliage without risking burn. Benefits include lush leaves and robust health.

A male oyster releases hundreds of thousands of sperm balls, each containing approximately 2,000 sperm. Females then bring the sperm into their shells through respiratory action and fertilize their eggs internally.

Oyster plant propagation

Oyster plant propagate through the production of a new small white flowers. Another way to propagate is stem cuttings is more efficiently and ensure successful results.

You can create a new plant that is genetically identical to the parent plant. A good idea to cut end of the stem in a rooting hormone powder, the rooting process and increase the chances of success.

These plants can tolerate lower light conditions, they will root more successfully in bright, indirect light. When selecting a plant for propagation, it’s important to choose a healthy and mature Oyster Plant.

A well-draining mixture of perlite and peat moss or a commercial potting mix specifically designed for rooting cuttings will work well.

Oyster plant Pruning

Pruning is important to produce a new plant.Old stems should be trimmed, and you should also maintain ventilation and light transmission, which will promote the growth of new tillers.

Use sharp, sanitized tools to shape and maintain plant health.Roots grow easiest from this location. If you leave a section of stem below the node, it often rots. Remove the lower leaves but leave the top two or three.

A light summer pruning can be performed on most deciduous trees and shrubs. Cutting about 1/3 of wood during any pruning activity.

This kind of moderate pruning is like giving your shrubs a good balance it thins them out a bit and encourages new growth.
