Light
Areca palms prefers in bright, indirect light but will tolerate a bit of shade. South or west facing windows are great as long as you ensure that the plant remains out of direct sunlight for the majority of the day.
If the plant gets too much direct sunlight, it may turn a yellowish green in color.. It only needs filtered light and tolerates lower light conditions.
Areca palm can tolerate brighter light. It can also be damaged by too much direct sunlight. If your Areca Palm is in direct sunlight, the leaves can turn brown and crispy.
Water
It requires just enough water to keep the soil moist, but not so much water that it’s drowning. This may take a bit of trial and error.
You’ll want to check your plant daily to make sure that it’s not too dry. You’ll need to water your plants once every ten days.
During the summer months, this may increase to once a week. Equally, in winter months, it’s not uncommon for larger Palms to only need watering once every two weeks or even less.
Soil
The best soil for palm plants is a loose, porous mixture, like a combination of peat moss, leaf mold, and shredded bark.
It craves a well-draining soil mix, much like its sandy natural habitat. Start with two parts peat moss for moisture retention.
Add one part perlite for that airy feel roots love, and one part sand to ensure water flows freely, avoiding dreaded root rot. Areca palms also like humidity, so mist the leaves a few times a week or stand on a tray of moist pebbles.
Temperature & humidity
Keep the leaves away from cold windows, air conditioners, and heat sources. Average room temperatures of 65-75 degrees F.
Areca palms are sensitive to low temperatures so if you place it outside during the summer be sure to bring it in before temperatures dip below 50 degrees. Long durations of 32°F or lower will severely damage or kill the plants.
For best growth, roots should be kept at 70-80°F with air temperatures up to 95°F.
This plant appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. Increase humidity by placing a water tray near the plant or using a humidifier.
Avoid placing it near draughts or cold air-conditioning vents. Optimal humidity levels for these tropical natives hover around 40-60%.
Fertilizer
A level teaspoon of Osmocote 19-6-12 fertilizer applied to a 6 inch pot every 3 months, or 200 ppm nitrogen from a 9-3-6 fertilizer applied weekly will supply the required fertilizer.
Nitrogen and potassium are your Areca Palm’s best friends when it comes to fertilizers. These macronutrients are the heavy lifters for lush foliage and strong roots, which set the stage for blooming.
A slow-release fertilizer, such as Milorganite, which can work for up to 10 weeks, as it provides nutrients over a longer period of time and reduces the risk of leaching.
Areca Palm propagation
The most common way to propagate is root division. This process can be done any time during the year.
Choose a mature plant, water well the day before dividing the roots from the soil.You can grow your own palm by cutting and transplanting a smaller offshoot, or by germinating the seeds yourself. Separate the offshoot with a knife.
Examine the base of the Areca palm to find any offshoots that are growing from the main branch.
Use a sharp knife to split this offshoot away from the main plant.Fill a bowl halfway with lukewarm or cool tap water, then submerge the exposed roots.
Let the plant soak for around an hour so the roots are ready to be replanted.
Areca Palm Pruning
Areca palms need not be pruned. However, do remove yellow, dead or dried leaves.
These often appear at the edge, as the plant always forms new leaves in the centre. To remove these leaves, cut them at the base, close to the main stem.
Just cut off any fronds as they turn yellow or brown. Doing so improves the look of your plants and creates a clean space for more fronds to grow.
If you want to help them thrive, even more, for most palm trees trimming them during warmer months such as late spring but not in the middle of summer – this offers the best recovery for them.
